DEFINITION
SENTENCE
SYNONYM/antonym
Matter (Bec)
Anything that can be weighed, seen and has volume. Matter can neither be created nor destroyed.
Matter is made up of atoms which make up everything.
Building blocks
Volume
(bec)
The amount of space an object occupies, holds or takes up.
The volume of a cube can be found by using the formula: LxWxH
Space
Atom (kim)
The make up of an element / The building blocks of everything.
We can find out what element an atom is by using the atomic number.
Particle.
Molecule (Bec)
2 or more atoms chemically combined.
A molecule can be recognised as an element, such as hydrogen
Particle
Compound
(Bec)
2 or more elements chemically combined.
A compound is a combination of 2 or more elements, eg: H2O
Combination
Solid (kim)
Has a definate shape, and definate volume.
The table was solid, you could tell because its shape and volume were distinct.
Compacted.
Liquid (kim)
Has indefinate shape, and definate volume.
A liquid can be formed when a solid is melted.
Fluid.
Gas (Jesse)
indefinate shape, indefinate volume.
Sublimation is the process that goes from solid to gas.
Freeze
A process between a liquid and a solid.
Freezing occurs hen a liquid is stored below 0 degrees.
Solidify.
Boil (Bec)
a temperature reaches 100 degrees celcius
A liquid will boil when its temperature reaches an average of 100 degrees and gas escapes from the surface.
Evaporate
Evaporate (kim)
When a atom reaches 100 degrees and escapes through the surface.
When a liquid is boiled and reaches 100 degrees, gas will escape the surface which is known as evaporation.
Disappear.
Condense (kim)
When a gas forms into a liquid.
Steam is a gas and when it cools down it forms back into a liquid, which is known as condensation.
-
Sublimatation (kim)
When a solid skips the melting stage and forms a gas.
Dry ice (CO2) will turn directly from a solid to a gas without entering the liquid phase.
Deposition.
Proton
(bec)
Positively charged particle
Protons are found in the nucleus of an atom
Neutron
(Bec)
Particle that has a neutral charge
Neutrons are located in the nucleus of an atom, along with protons.
Electron
(Bec)
A negatively charged particle.
Electrons have no weight and are found in the outer shells that circle the nuclues.
Atomic Number(Bec)
The atomic number is the amount of protons an element is made up of.
By knowing the atomic number we can find the amount of protons in an element which define what the element is.
Atomic Mass
Group
(Bec)
Vertical columns which arrange elements on the periodic table that are similar in structure.
The group number on a periodic table is the same as the number of electrons in the outer shell.
columns
Period (Jesse)
The number of shells in an element, and moves left to right on the P.T
Across a period, reactivity decreases
Shell (Jesse)
The number of layers around the nucleus, neutrons.
layers
Nucleus (Jesse)
The middle of on atom.
If a nucleus was in the middle of the MCG, it would be the size of a marble. =P
